The idea for Movember was sparked in 2003 over a few beers in Melbourne, Australia. The guys behind it joked about 80s fashion and decided it was time to bring the moustache back. In order to justify their Mos (Australian slang for moustache), they used their new looks to raise money for prostate cancer research… never dreaming that facial hair would ultimately lead to a global movement that would get men talking about a taboo subject – their health.
A Mo Bro starts Movember – the month formerly known as November – clean shaven, and grows a moustache all month long, garnering support from friends and family in the form of donations. What’s more, a Mo Bro is a walking billboard for the cause as his new look opens the door for him to talk about prostate cancer – making the moustache a symbol, much like the pink ribbon is for breast cancer.
In 2007 Movember came to Canada showing substantial year after year growth in both popularity and funds raised.
Theta Omega Mo came to be through a group of Burlington Centaurs Rugby Players who's team mate and friend was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer 3yrs ago. He allowed the symptoms he was having to persist for over 6 months before seeking help. By that time his tumour had grown to the size of a grapefruit. After over a year and a half of heavy Chemo and Radiation twice a week, he ended up on the right side of the rugby pitch. We are happy to say that our friend is a survivor and here with us today to tell his story.
We, found it outrageous that as Men we find it hard to talk about our bodies and health. We can shower together 3 times a week after practice. In the locker room we can talk about everything from Sex to Cars to Recipes to Sex but the one thing we can’t talk about is the most important thing of all…., Our Health!
Theta Omega Mo was formed to allow Mo Bro's to become a part of a team of like minded individuals who wished to pool their life and business experience to work towards 2 common goals.
1. To raise awareness of prostate cancer and break down the shroud of silence surrounding Men's health
2. To help raise a substantial amount of funds to support research in to finding out more about this disease and eventually work towards finding a cure!
